SUSIE AND DAVID ARRIVED on Saturday morning. After a light lunch, Susie returned to her home, David unpacked and began to get excited at the prospect of seeing Caroline again.

But she didn’t show up. At three o’clock I rang her number.

Her voice was anxious. “I’ve had the most terrifying dream again. Your friend Aurelia came to me with a warning. If you and I saw each other just once more, she’d engineer a fatal traffic accident and I’d be taken straight to hell.”

I heard her crying.

“I don’t want this, Andrew. It was so real. That woman is evil, and I can’t possibly see you with something like that hanging over me.”

I thought quickly. I was going to tell her my intentions, but decided against it. Instead, I accepted her decision, feigned disappointment, and hung up. Then I grabbed David, went out to the car and sped round to Caroline’s house.

She opened the door, and gave me a horrified look. She was about to close the door in my face, but then she looked down and saw David looking up at her, and tried to smile.

He spoke first. “That horrid lady has been to see you, hasn’t she?” He reached forward and took her hand.

I was aghast. Caroline gazed at him blankly. “I haven’t told him anything,” I protested. “He knows nothing about this.”

“Mummy told me about it. She says the lady is cruel and horrid, but you shouldn’t worry about her. I can look after you.”

Caroline and I stared at each other, saying nothing.

“Are you coming to tea today? Or had you forgotten?”

“I could look after you too, if you gave me the chance,” I added with a tentative smile.

The tension in her face visibly dissolved. “Come in, and give me two minutes to get ready.”

We sat quietly on the sofa in her living room. I had no idea that David still had some kind of link with Jane; his words with Caroline on her doorstep took me completely by surprise. I wondered if he had any kind of psychic abilities, and would begin talking about Caroline’s late husband, in whose house we now sat. But David was silent, patiently waiting for his heroine to prepare herself. I wanted to speak, but it seemed inappropriate; the atmosphere was charged with expectation. Everything seemed to hinge on how well things went this afternoon, for David and for me too.

She came into the room briskly, attending to the back of her hair. “O.K., let’s go.”

David gave a loud cheer and ran to the front door.

It was nearly four when we arrived at my house; I went straight to the kitchen to prepare the afternoon tea I had promised.

“Do you need a hand out there?” she called.

“No. Everything’s fine, thanks.”

“Andrew, I can only stay two hours. I’m sorry.”

“Then we’ll have to make the most of it.”
